Newest Addition to the Family

After approximately 25 trips to Home Depot/Lowes, 43 slivers, one blackened fingernail, and 704 ounces of Powerade, the fort/playhouse is done. It's 6' X 8', about 7' feet tall and has to weigh like 1,000 lbs. It's been a fun project and the kids are excited that it's finally done. Today they are starting to decorate the inside, so I'll post photos of that later. It was a great family project and it was nice to get the kids involved whenever possible. I had never built anything like this before and don't expect to again anytime soon. Especially if it happens to fall over anytime in the next year. The whole process started when we added some Trex to our deck and had a little leftover wood that I figured needed to be used for something.

Thanks to family who helped out and also loaned tools and especially thanks to Jason, without whom the roof probably would not have been done until around October.

Here's a photo tour of the process. It took about three weeks.

Dug up grass, leveled ground, built bottom frame. Then I think it rained for about a month...

Plywood on the frame. The kids had fun dancing on this. I probably could have stopped at this point and they would have been happy...

As soon as I had all the lumber sitting the yard/garage, I realized I was committed, and frankly that scared me a little bit...

Assembling one of the four walls...

Cutting boards for the front wall...

Elijah helping set boards in place...

Raising the walls. I started to realize that this thing might actually come together...

Later that night it did...

Getting ready to cut the roofing...

Securing the roof...

The boys were good at fetching supplies and taking pictures of the project...

Laying the last few shingles with Jason as Elijah looks on...

Christina applying waterproofing. I figured it would also be a good time to sand and paint the sandbox. The boys did a great job painting...

The kids and cousin Eliza relaxing in the nearly-completed playhouse...

The final product. Eventually it will have a door...
